Explore Japan | Takachiho Gorge

Day 3

After a quick breakfast at the hotel we heading down to Takachiho gorge for a boat ride through the gorge. I recommend going early. It got really busy around 10am, we head a 930 boat ride. It was so beautiful and definitely worth it. (Just a heads up, there are a lot of stairs going down into the gorge to board the boat.)

After we finished our boat ride, we walked around the area. We found THE photo spot, so of course I took pictures. Then we fed the ducks and watched the koi at a little pond. We found a Nagashi somen restaurant, Inakaya. A quick internet search told me that this dish was supposedly invented here in Takachiho. What a perfect place to try it for the first time! It was only ¥600 per person. They were kind enough to let use split our servings with our kiddos.

You are served a dipping sauce and chopsticks (forks for the littles). They announced they are sending noodles and they start coming down in little mouth sized batches. You scoop up the noodles, let them drip, dunk them in the sauce and enjoy. So. Good. I think all noodles should be served sliding down a bamboo shoot now. What a cool experience! They kids really enjoyed trapping their noodles. Thank goodness of the catch tray. We may have missed a few. Ha! We finished off our trip with an ice cream cone. It was an amazing (last minute) weekend adventure!
